Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey says he wants conservative choices for the Judicial Selection Commission, a panel that screens judicial nominees for gubernatorial appointment to appellate courts.
The speakers of the House and Senate appoint members of the Judicial Selection Commission mainly from a list generated from lawyer's associations. State trial lawyers, criminal defense lawyers and other members of the bar recommend potential appointees.
Ramsey, a Republican, said changing the method of selection could result in "judges politically aligned with conservatives."
The Judicial Commission is subject to legislative renewal this year. If agreement is not reached on the selection process the authority for the Commission could lapse.
Ramsey said he has spoken about the the need for an open system with Democratic House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh, who told Ramsey that he"might like the people on the list."

The House and Senate speakers select the members of the commission, not the judges. The governor is the only one that selects the replacement judge from the list of 3 that the Judicial Selection Commission recommends.
Thanks for the improvement in the original post. ---Dru
